Gaming Keyboard Comparison

Key gaming keyboard features to compare

Switch Tech

Membrane - Low acoustic noise, low cost, low durability

Mechanical - High acoustic noise, high cost, high durability

Optical - High acoustic noise, very high cost, high durability, allows adjustable actuation point (height of the keypress when the key stroke is registered), allows analogue input (variable input level depending how much the key is pressed)

Style

100% / Full-Size - Traditional keyboard layout, including a full num pad.

75% - Smaller, saving desk space, but reducing the key count, typically sacrificing the num pad, and sometimes arrow keys.

Tenkeyless - Sacrifices the numpad for to save on valuable deskspace

Keycaps

ABS - Standard plastic keys (ABS is a very common type), typically letteering is either printed on each key, or the key painted leaving a clear window for RBG lighting, both can wear off. However its also the cheapest to produce.

Double shot ABS - To overcome print wearing off, double shot ABS uses multiple layers of the plastic, often to create a transparent window, so is more durable than just 'ABS'.

Double shot PBT - PBT refers to a harder type of plastic so is more durable, but is a little more costly.

RGB

Per key - Lighting can be indivually set per key, depending on software supplied with the keyboard is can also be set to continually change colour, or react to events.

Zoned - Lower cost keyboards used multiple zones for RGB, rather then per key

Polling Rate

The number of times per second the keyboard checks for input, the higher numbers ensure even the quickly inputs are captured more accurately.

Roll-Over

N-Key - Means an unlimited number of keys can be depressed simultaneously and successfully registered.

Anti-Ghosting

This feature prevents incorrect key registration when many keys are pressed simultaneously.

Media Controls

Media controls come in many configurations, but typically their main aim is to enable video/music to be paused / skipped / stopped and volume controls.
